Film Use for Player Development.

Theory:

Consistent exposure to basketball players with similar profiles (age/playstyle) correctly performing skills, actions, or tactics will lead to more consistent in-game performance, specifically regarding decision making, positioning, spacing, and timing.

Method:

Working with high school basketball coaches, we will analyze their game film from last season, learn about roster changes, and prepare a collection of clips from FIBA U18-U14 levels that fit the coach’s scheme and personnel. We want the clips for each team to cover important skills, actions, and tactics that fit the coach’s system and will be reinforced during next season. The FIBA clips will serve as a visual reference for players to connect with in order to better understand exactly what the coach wants. With the FIBA clips as a teaching tool to use in normal film sessions, coaches can also consistently find small “teachable moments” (3-5 minute individual meetings) before and after practices to reinforce the skills, actions, or tactics they would like to see from their players.

Evaluating Progress:

Each team will have a profile with detailed notes about their personnel and playstyle in order to find FIBA clips that fit. We will  update the profile as we communicate with the coaches throughout the study to hear their observations about how their players are developing. We will watch games next season to monitor what the players are doing in games and note the development of their decision making, positioning, spacing, and timing. Additionally, at each coach’s request, we will add more FIBA clips to address their needs during the season.

Participation lasts from registration until final meeting after the end of each coach’s 2025-26 basketball season.
